What to expect
Consultations
Consultations take approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour.
You will be asked to complete a form prior to your appointment.
This will be for some demographic information and some medical history.

You will leave the consultation with either a written or verbal recommendation, and you will likely receive a copy of the letter, which is provided to your referring doctor.

Nerve conduction studies and EMG
Your referring doctor may have requested a nerve conduction study for your problem.
Also, as part of the consultation, it may be recommended for you to undergo a nerve conduction study to help diagnose the problem.
A nerve conduction study is a diagnostic tool which measures the speed and amount of signal which is transmitted down the nerves. The test is performed by applying electrical pulses ("zaps") to the nerve, and measuring the response. This can be uncomfortable, due to the electricity or the muscle activation that the electric zap produces, but has no lasting effects and should not be too painful

For some complaints, such as muscle weakness, a needle EMG may be undertaken. This involves the insertion of a thin needle into the muscle, to listen and look for normal or abnormal activity. Nothing is injected. Needle insertion is uncomfortable, but is normally well tolerated.

A verbal report of the findings will be provided to you, and you will receive a paper copy of the report shortly after your appointment.
What to Bring
Please bring a paper referral from your referring doctor if you have one
Please bring your Medicare card, or DVA card.
If your case is under an insurance or worker's compensation claim, please ensure pre-approval is obtained and provide documentation
If your consultation is regarding a specific event such as a loss of consciousness, please bring a witness, video or report if you have one

For nerve studies:
We will need access to the limbs to be studied - please wear loose fitting clothing
Please do not put lotions or creams on your skin - it can affect the accuracy
You should take all your normal medications, but please ask us if you are taking medication for myasthenia gravis.
